What is a STAR station?

STAR stations are smog check stations certified by the state to meet higher performance standards. If your DMV renewal notice says your vehicle requires a smog check at a STAR station, use the "STAR stations only" filter above.

Most gasoline vehicles more than 8 model-years old need a smog inspection every two years for registration renewal, and most vehicles need one when sold or when first registered from out of state. Diesel vehicles 1998 and newer under 14,001 lbs GVWR also require inspections.
